With a desire for sustainability for the training centre as well as to provide an opportunity to teach practical skills, Uzima began offering three-month computer classes in 2001. Young men and women became its students. A person with a certificate in computers is more likely to be hired than someone who does not, so students who have completed secondary school but lack computer skills participate in the training in order to increase their employment potential.

In the class, students learn basic computer skills--word processing, spreadsheets, databases, graphical presentations, internet and e-mail. Upon completion of classes, they go to Mombasa to take an exam for certification that demonstrates a level of skill that is recognized internationally.

Fashion and Design classes began a few years later. The two-year course allows young men and women who are unable to complete secondary school due to financial problems the opportunity to learn a trade that can provide resources to provide for themselves.

For the first year of the class, students focus on dressmaking, fashion and design as they are taught to make women’s clothes. If they choose to continue to the second year, they are taught tailoring of men’s clothes. Upon completion of each class, they participate in the Kenyan national examination at a nearby polytechnic school. Successful students finish with a certificate, the credentials they need to prove their job skills, and the opportunity to get employment or to start their own small business to provide for their families.
